Lexus Reinvents the LS as a Six-Wheeled Lounge

Lexus turned its flagship LS name into a six-wheeled, three-row concept at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, and the brand now says the letters stand for "Luxury Space" rather than "Luxury Sedan."

Lexus turned its flagship LS name into a six-wheeled, three-row concept at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, and the brand now says the letters stand for "Luxury Space" rather than "Luxury Sedan."

The LS Concept is a tall, boxy people carrier with two panoramic glass roofs, a split tailgate and bamboo shades for privacy. Lexus added the extra pair of wheels to free up floor space and make getting in and out easier, and the second-row seats don’t have to fold to reach the third row. They can also rotate 180 degrees to turn the cabin into a meeting room.

Lexus Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries introduced the concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 press briefing on October 29, 2025. "I did promise you the future would be about more than four wheels but you probably weren’t expecting six," he said, describing an LS that "no longer stands for Luxury Sedan nor Luxury SUV but rather for Luxury Space." Humphries said the six-wheel layout maximizes floor space and gives unhindered access to the cabin.

The concept may be more than a show car. Toyota Times quoted its chief engineer as saying, "This isn’t just a concept model," and adding that the team is "serious about working toward a commercial release." Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda called the project "an incredible challenge," Motor1 reported, and said a six-wheeled Lexus still has to deliver the quietness, comfort and off-road ability people expect. Lexus has not released dimensions or powertrain details.

The LS Concept wasn’t alone. Lexus also showed an LS Coupe Concept, which Humphries described as "as fun for the driver as it is for the passenger," with rear seats facing screens that can show the view from a front camera, the faces of front-seat passengers or a map. An LS Micro Concept, a single-seat autonomous pod for the last leg of a trip, a Lexus Sport Concept and a Lexus Catamaran rounded out the display, along with an air taxi from Lexus partner Joby. Lexus Enthusiast noted that Lexus calls the LS Concept, LS Coupe Concept and Sport Concept an "arrowhead" for the brand’s future.

The timing matters for American buyers, because the LS sedan is ending here. Carscoops reported that Lexus is retiring the LS in the U.S. after 2026 with a 250-car Heritage Edition, and Toyota Motor North America’s third-quarter report shows only 150 LS sales through September 2026.

The Toyota Report Take

A six-wheeled van is not what anyone pictured as the next LS, but the logic is sound. Lexus already sells the LM, a luxury van based on the Alphard, and a flagship built around rear-seat space fits the way many wealthy buyers actually use these cars better than another big sedan would. The harder question is whether American buyers, who grew up with the LS as a sedan, will see a six-wheeled van as an LS at all.
