The eighth-generation Lexus ES, the sedan that took the GS’s place in the Lexus lineup, is now larger than the GS ever was in every major dimension.

The new ES measures 5,140 mm (202.4 inches) long on a 2,950 mm (116.1-inch) wheelbase, against 4,890 mm (192.5 inches) and 2,850 mm (112.2 inches) for the last GS. That makes the ES almost 10 inches longer than the midsize rear-drive sedan that once sat above it, with nearly 4 more inches between the axles.

The ES dimensions come from Top Gear Philippines’ coverage of the new ES at its April 2025 world premiere in Shanghai, which also showed how much the ES grew over its own predecessor, at 4,950 mm long and 1,455 mm tall. The new car moves to Toyota’s GA-K platform, shared with the Crown, Alphard, Lexus LM and Lexus RX, and offers hybrid and electric versions. The ES 300h hybrid makes 198 horsepower, the ES 350h makes 244 horsepower and offers all-wheel drive, the single-motor ES 350e makes 221 horsepower, and the dual-motor ES 500e makes 338 horsepower. The GS figures come from the fourth-generation car built from December 2011 to August 2020, which grew from 4,850 mm to 4,890 mm long in its 2016 update.

The GS lost a lopsided fight with its own sibling. When Lexus confirmed in 2020 that the GS would end after that model year, Motor Authority reported that a spokesperson said "we are constantly evaluating model mixes throughout our lineup" and that the GS had accounted for a small share of sales in recent years. AutoGuide noted that Lexus sold 51,336 ES sedans in 2019 and just 3,378 GS models. The 467-horsepower GS F went away with it, and a 200-car GS 350 F SPORT Black Line edition closed out the run.

In the U.S., the bigger ES now starts at $49,005 on Lexus’s 2027 price sheet, including delivery. Unlike the rear-drive GS, the ES is a front-drive design with available all-wheel drive, and none of its versions offers a V8.

The Toyota Report Take

Lexus didn’t just replace the GS with the ES, it turned the ES into the car the GS used to be, at least in size and cabin space. What it didn’t carry over is the rear-drive balance and the available V8 that made the GS feel special to drive. For most buyers, a roomier and more efficient ES is the better deal, but enthusiasts lost something real when Lexus decided one midsize sedan was enough.
