2022-2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid Recalled Over Seat Issue

In October 2026, Toyota began recalling 228,367 seven-seat 2022-2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid minivans because their second-row seat backs can come unlocked in a crash. The recall, filed on October 20, covers only seven-passenger vans whose second-row seats have an integrated seat belt pretensioner, so eight-seat Siennas are not included.
Toyota found the problem on its own. Between January and November 2025, its engineers were sled-testing a modified seat belt and a modified production second-row seat for a future seat design when the outboard recliner on the seat back disengaged, and that started a year-long investigation. Further sled tests through August 2026 showed that when the pretensioner fires, the load sets up an oscillation between the cam and the pawls inside the recliner mechanism, and under certain combinations of crash pulse, seat back movement and pretensioner timing that oscillation can be strong enough to let the recliner rotate out of its locked position. Vehicle crash tests in September and October confirmed it, and Toyota decided on the recall on October 14. Toyota says that as of October 12 it had no field technical reports and no warranty claims from U.S. sources that relate to the condition, and it cannot estimate how many of the recalled vans actually have the defect.
The defect: the second-row seat backs may fail to remain secured in the event of a crash.
The hazards: a seat back that is not secured may fail to properly protect an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Components: the right and left second-row seat back frames (part numbers 79103-08041 and 79104-08041), supplied by Toyota Boshoku Indiana of Princeton, Indiana
Affected vehicles: seven-passenger 2022-2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid built from September 16, 2021 to July 20, 2026
Number of vehicles affected: 228,367
The fix: for most vans, dealers will update the supplemental restraint system (SRS) electronic control unit (ECU) software that controls the pretensioner. Toyota is still developing that software. For about 200 2022-2025 Sienna Hybrids equipped with the "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) package, dealers will replace both second-row seat backs with new ones that use a different recliner mechanism. Repairs will be performed free of charge.
