A Loaded GR Corolla Now Costs More Than a Civic Type R

A fully loaded 2026 Toyota GR Corolla Premium Plus with the automatic now lists for $49,160, which puts Toyota's rally-bred hatchback above the price of a Honda Civic Type R.

A fully loaded 2026 Toyota GR Corolla Premium Plus with the automatic now lists for $49,160, which puts Toyota’s rally-bred hatchback above the price of a Honda Civic Type R.

Even the base manual, at $41,115, is a long way from where the GR Corolla started. When it launched for 2023, the base car, then called the Core, cost $36,995 and the better-equipped Circuit Edition cost $43,995. The base manual has since climbed $4,120, the most expensive manual has gone up $3,165, and the automatic that arrived for 2025 adds another $2,000 on top of either one.

The Drive laid out the climb in its look at the 2026 lineup, comparing the GR Corolla with the Civic Type R at $47,090 and the Volkswagen Golf R at $48,325, using 2025 prices for both rivals. Each of those cars comes with adaptive dampers, which the Toyota still doesn’t offer, and the outlet argued that the Hyundai Elantra N has taken over the GR Corolla’s old role as the value pick in the class. The 2026 prices as The Drive listed them break down like this:

Base$41,115$43,115
Premium Plus$47,160$49,160

Toyota has at least kept adding hardware as the price went up. The 2026 car gets 45.6 feet of additional structural adhesive to stiffen the body, a new secondary air intake duct to help keep engine temperatures down, and matte black wheels in place of the previous finish, while the Premium Plus adds a JBL sound system with a subwoofer. The 2025 update brought 22 more lb-ft of torque, suspension revisions and the automatic option, and the base car now comes with front and rear limited-slip differentials that the original Core didn’t have as standard. The 8-inch touchscreen, with its thick bezels, carries over even though regular Corollas have moved on to a newer center stack.

The GR Corolla is no longer the most expensive way to buy one, either. The limited-production two-seat GRMN Corolla starts at $64,360 before destination, according to Motor1, which makes even a loaded Premium Plus look like the sensible choice in Toyota’s own showroom.

The Toyota Report Take

Every update to the GR Corolla has made it a better car, and none of the price increases are outrageous on their own. Added together, though, they have taken away the thing that made the GR Corolla such an easy recommendation in 2023, which was that it undercut the Type R and the Golf R while matching them for fun. The base manual is still a strong buy at around $41,000, but anyone shopping a Premium Plus automatic near $50,000 should drive the Honda first, because at that price the Toyota needs the adaptive dampers and modern screen that it still lacks.
