The Electric Corolla Cross Finally Drops Its Borrowed Body

Photos that surfaced in early November show a disguised prototype of Toyota's electric Corolla Cross in public wearing its own body for the first time, rather than the current crossover's sheet metal.

Photos that surfaced in early November show a disguised prototype of Toyota’s electric Corolla Cross in public wearing its own body for the first time, rather than the current crossover’s sheet metal.

The test car was seen near Toyota’s European headquarters and research center. It has a closed-off grille, a body shape of its own with a low, almost sports-car-like silhouette, and a large COROLLA badge spelled out across the tailgate.

Electrek reported the sighting on November 2 using images first published by the Chinese outlet Autohome, and it described the car as "captured in public for the first time ahead of its expected 2027 debut." Toyota has not confirmed the model, its specifications or its timing, and the outlet expects the production car to stay close to the Corolla Concept that Toyota showed at the Japan Mobility Show.

This is a step on from the test mule seen in late October, which hid an electric drivetrain under a shortened Corolla Cross body. It also follows the Corolla’s 60th birthday event in Japan on November 1, where the chief engineer of the next generation hinted at an all-electric Corolla built around electrification and software.

Electrek expects the EV to be offered with single-motor and dual-motor layouts and at least 250 miles of range, though it does not say where those figures come from. It also repeats Car and Driver’s estimates for the wider next-generation Corolla family, of about $25,000 for a gas model, about $27,000 for a hybrid and around $30,000 for the electric and plug-in versions. The next Corolla is expected to be the first car on Toyota’s new multi-powertrain platform, which can take electric, hybrid and gas drivetrains, and production of the next generation is reported to start in China in 2028 at FAW Toyota. Toyota has not said whether the electric version will be sold in the US.

The Toyota Report Take

A mule tells you a powertrain is being tested, but a production-shaped body on a public road tells you the design is close to done. That the prototype carries the Corolla name across its tail, rather than a bZ badge, says a lot about how Toyota plans to sell this car: as the familiar, sensible choice that just happens to be electric.

The open question for Americans remains where it gets built and where it gets sold. A Corolla-badged EV at around $30,000 would land in a part of the US market with very few rivals, and if Toyota can bring it here at that price it would matter more than any bZ it has sold so far.
