The Corolla FX Came Back for Just One Year

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition, a 1,600-car tribute to the 1980s Corolla FX16, turned out to be a one-year special, because Toyota dropped it from the 2027 lineup.

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition, a 1,600-car tribute to the 1980s Corolla FX16, turned out to be a one-year special, because Toyota dropped it from the 2027 lineup.

The FX was a 2026 Corolla Hatchback SE dressed up. It got 18-inch gloss white alloy wheels with black lug nuts, a black vented rear wing and a heritage-style badge on the hatch, plus black Sport Touring seats with suede inserts and orange stitching that carries onto the door panels, steering wheel and shifter boot. Underneath it was the regular hatchback, with a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a CVT and a 33 mpg combined estimate.

Toyota’s May 2025 announcement said only 1,600 FX Editions would be built for the U.S., in Inferno, Ice Cap or Blue Crush Metallic, and that they would reach dealers in the fall of 2025. The release held back the price, and Carscoops later reported that the FX listed at $26,780 before destination. That put it between the $24,180 SE and the $27,175 XSE, and $2,000 above the Nightshade it replaced.

The FX doesn’t appear on the 2027 option sheet, Gear Patrol reported, so the 2027 Corolla Hatchback comes only as an SE or XSE. The white 18-inch wheels survive as a Toyota accessory, and Gear Patrol noted the wing is still available too, but the orange-stitched seats and the retro badge went away with the FX. MotorWeek pointed out that the FX name had already run for one year on the Corolla sedan before it moved to the hatchback.

That leaves the FX as one of the rarer modern Corollas. Toyota hasn’t said how many of the 1,600 have been sold, and any left on dealer lots are 2026 models.

The Toyota Report Take

The FX was a costume rather than a performance car, and Toyota never pretended otherwise, but it gave a sensible hatchback some personality for about $2,600 over the SE. A run of 1,600 cars is small enough that clean examples should hold their value better than an ordinary SE, and anyone who wanted one should look now rather than wait for a return that Toyota hasn’t promised.
