Toyota Land Cruiser sales jumped 63 percent in Japan in October, to 7,154 units and a top-ten finish, in the same month US sales fell by more than half.

Toyota filled seven of the ten places on Japan’s October list. The Yaris held first place at 15,157 units even though it was down 11 percent, the Sienta minivan climbed to second at 10,730 on a 34 percent gain, and the Corolla was third at 10,551, down 12 percent. The Voxy, Roomy and Alphard took fifth, sixth and eighth, and the Land Cruiser slotted in ninth behind the Suzuki Jimny, which was up 54 percent to 7,231. Honda’s Freed and Vezel were the only other models in the top ten.

The ranking comes from figures the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the national kei car association released on November 6, as reported by Car Watch. The Land Cruiser figure covers the whole series as sold in Japan, and the Jimny total combines the Jimny Sierra and Jimny Nomad.

9Toyota Land Cruiser7,154+63.4%
10Honda Vezel6,530-12.1%

The contrast with the American market is stark. Toyota sold 1,124 Land Cruisers in the US in October, down 57.6 percent, and its ten-month total of 27,821 is off 26.4 percent from last year. That follows a 2025 in which US Land Cruiser sales rose 50.9 percent to 43,946, and it has happened while the related 4Runner moved 10,623 units in October alone. In other words, Japan bought more than six Land Cruisers for every one sold in the United States last month, in a market a fraction of the size.

On the kei car side, Honda’s N-BOX led at 14,832 units, up 16 percent, ahead of the Suzuki Spacia. Toyota’s Daihatsu subsidiary held third and fourth with the Tanto at 12,361 and the Move at 11,713, though both fell, the Move by 27 percent, and the Mira and Taft also made the top ten.

Of the seven Toyotas in the passenger-car top ten, only the Corolla and the Land Cruiser are sold in the United States. The Yaris, Sienta, Voxy and Roomy are Japan-market small cars and minivans, and the Alphard is the luxury van that reaches American buyers only in Lexus LM form.

The Toyota Report Take

The same nameplate is booming in one market and sagging in the other, and the difference is what sits next to it in the showroom. In Japan the Land Cruiser is the halo off-roader with no in-house rival, so a 63 percent jump reads as pent-up demand finally being filled. In the US the 250-series Land Cruiser shares a platform, a powertrain and a price neighborhood with a 4Runner that outsold it nearly ten to one in October, and buyers have voted. Toyota does not have a Land Cruiser problem so much as a positioning problem on this side of the Pacific, and Japan’s October chart is a reminder that the product itself is not what is holding it back.
